Y - Speak

Exploring the power of the voice to inspire and transform.

The Y - Speak? programme introduces the simple question: why do we speak? This is the starting point for an inspirational process through which students examine complex issues addressing vocal communication. To speak is a choice. Through speech we engage with those around us. It is a sharing of thoughts and feelings to inspire change.

Course Aims:

• To raise awareness of the voice as a powerful tool of communication, through active and creative learning.
• To experiment with language, develop listening skills and independent thinking.
• To address complex issues around the impact of our voice on ourselves and others.
• To develop confidence through more effective communication skills.

Storytelling forms a crucial part of the workshop, along with games, songs and performances. It introduces a delight in the spoken word and encourages the development of skills through active listening. Through storytelling the voice engages the imagination, conjuring characters and extraordinary events from thin air. Familiar surroundings are transformed as the story unfolds and through group discussions ideas are shared.
